Les bagnes coloniaux du Second Empire et de la Troisième République ont surtout été considérés comme des lieux d'expiation implantés outre-mer (particulièrement en Guyane de 1852 à 1953) afin de punir des condamnés aux travaux forcés issus de France métropolitaine. En oubliant que ce processus de transportation a aussi concerné l'ensemble de l'Empire colonial français, et plus particulièrement l'Algérie où la mémoire de ce dernier exil est encore vivace. Par contre, la Guyane n'en a conservé nulle trace, et les chercheurs ont insuffisamment étudié le destin de ces milliers d'hommes pris dans l'étau d'une histoire tout à la fois pénale et coloniale |

The colonial prisons of the Second Empire and of the Third Republic were above all considered to be places of atonement set up overseas (in particular in Guiana from 1852 to 1953) to punish convicts from mainland France sentenced to hard labour, forgetting that the process of transportation also concerned all of the French colonial empire and in particular Algeria where the memory of that final exile is still very much alive. On the other hand, Guiana has failed to keep any trace and researchers have not sufficiently studied the fate of those thousands of men caught in the vice of penal and colonial history |
