This article examines the history of volunteer African American soldiers who went to fight in Spain's civil war in 1936. They were not only inspired by their commitment to Communism, but also were inspired by a "Pan-Africanist" spirit which looked historically to Spain as part of a successful and flourishing African civilization. However, the reality that the African American troops faced was quite different than their desires.
