Using Peggy Phelan's definition of performance, as that which acts out its own disappearance, I argue that performance functions as a stage for performativity, where words and actions inform each other, and where what is acted out is the constructability and destructionability of a unified and universal perception. Mallarme, Artaud and Yacine frustrate various readerly habits and expectations to invite us to explore and contemplate the links between literature, social practices and community. IX

This dissertation examines the inherent instability in language and writing as manifested in the textual performances located in Stephane Mallarme's, Antonin Artaud's and Kateb Yacine's works. IX
