The author examines how the war served as an incubator for the shape of the development that would take place when France was eventually ousted. French president Charles de Gaulle saw the need to bring social and economic development into the country to gain support form Muslims, however; this was never fully achieved. Muslims took over various forms of industry in the country and gained control of Algeria's economic resources.
