_aItalians held large areas of the better agricultural land in Libya in 1940. Although the colonists in Cyrenaica were evacuated prior to British occupation, the majority of those in Tripolitania remained to face an uncertain future under British and then Libyan administration. The pace of land transfers accelerated after the 1956 Italo-Libyan Accord and spread from planned settlements to private farms and estates By 1964, Libyans controlled practically all former Italian lands.
