520 | _aConsiderable critical attention has been devoted to the theme of lamentation in the Arabic and Hebrew poetry concerning the fall of cities and regions of Islamic Spain (al- Andalus/Sefarad, 711-1492 C.E.) to the Christian Reconquista. However, until now no attempt has been made to use contemporary literary theories to classify this extensive and varied body of poetry, which is often subsumed under the broad heading of 'elegies for cities.' Engaging current literary theories, I propose to divide this body of Arabic and Hebrew poetry of al-Andalus into four dominant types: 1) Incitement to Resistance; 2) Supplication for Assistance; 3) Expulsion and Anxiety; and 4) Post-Expulsion and Nostalgia. These categories form the basis, respectively, of the four main chapters of the dissertation. | ||
